Living with Intention is Key

Start by creating a family mission statement

We created a family mission statement years ago when Cameron was a baby. Similar to a business mission statement, a family mission statement identifies core values, goals, and priorities of a family. When things get tough, or when there’s a difficult decision to make, we have referred back to our family mission statement for direction and clarity.

We wanted to include our intentions and values for this trip, and asked the kids to participate. We are excited to see how this may change throughout the next year!

  • Why is traveling as a family important to us?

It is important that we educate ourselves about other cultures to eliminate a fear of experiencing the unknown.

How do we want this journey to shape who we are as a family?

I want this journey to force us into things we wouldn’t have ordinarily done in order to make us ready to face any adventure in the future.

Looking back after this journey, what do we hope to have learned or remembered?

I hope that we learn that we can always depend on each other’s strengths.

How do we want this experience to change our lives or bring us closer together?

I would like it to make us more grateful for what we have.

  • Why is traveling as a family important to us?

I believe traveling and being exposed to various cultures expands our capacity for empathy and curiosity. I want to build these traits in my kids so they can grow to be compassionate adults. Exploring as a family is important for a few reasons. I want to see their faces when they conquer their fears, see something magnificent, and taste something gross. As much as I want to give them all kinds of cultural experiences, I want to enjoy it alongside them.

How do we want this journey to shape who we are as a family?

I’d like this to mold us all into more tolerant and patient people.

Looking back after this journey, what do we hope to have learned or remembered?

I hope we can look back on this experience and be able to laugh at the fun and difficult times we shared together. I hope we will have learned how to be more tolerant, patient, and compassionate people when this is all over.

How do we want this experience to change our lives or bring us closer together?

I have two sons and one day, they may not want to hang out with their boring old mom. I hope this trip will allow them to get to know the fun part of their mom, rather than the busy and working mom they’ve known for the past several years.
